3.1 b Ensure Access to Meet Student Needs

Students with SEN at my school, engaging with tablets during their Technology class.

This section stresses that it is the leader's job to make sure that all students have equal access to technology, internet access, digital content that is appropriate for all students, and learning spaces that can be adjusted to fit different learning styles and needs. This standard is all about making sure that everyone has equal access to technology and that every student can use it in a supportive learning environment.

At my institution, more must be done to ensure that adequate amounts of resources are sourced, maintained and properly secured. Assistive technology is not readily made available for students and is often left up to the parents to source. You are also told that software is expensive and asked to use free and limited versions of a program. Despite these challenges, my school leaders should  endeavour to advocate for policies and practices ....

Ensuring Everyone has Reliable Access to Technology and the Internet

Leaders play a crucial role in ensuring that all students, no matter their economic circumstances, have the technology, tools and internet access they need to fully participate in digital learning. This can be achieved through 1:1 device programs, collaboration with local businesses and internet providers, and inclusive digital content.

Ensuring that Everyone can Access Inclusive Digital Content

Leaders should work to make sure that all students can access digital content that is inclusive and relevant to their culture. This way, all students can see themselves reflected in the curriculum and find materials that meet their needs.

variety of digital content

 Making Digital Learning Environments Accessible

Leaders should also ensure that all digital resources and tools can be used by students with disabilities and can be modified to fit their needs. Such can be done by providing assistive technologyUniversal Design for Learning (UDL) tools, and personalized learning platforms.

Using Technology to Support Differentiated Learning Needs

Leaders should make certain that technology resources can be changed or customised to meet the unique learning needs of each student. For e.g. technology that is compatible with screen reader software, text-to-speech systems, braille, large print, large tactile buttons, adaptive learning software for reading and maths, and language support tools for English Language Learners (ELLs), -to name a few- can be used.

Giving All Staff and Students Access to Resources for Digital Safety and Citizenship

Leaders should guarantee access to resources and training on how to be safe, private, and responsible online, through digital citizenship programs and cybersecurity awareness sessions.

Making Sure Everyone Has Equal Access to Tech-Enhanced Learning Spaces

Leaders should create flexible, tech-enabled learning spaces that work with a variety of learning styles and encourage participation, e.g. tech labs can be opened after school to allow students to work on digital assignments or explore learning resources.
